Concerns have been raised on the partnership between the Fiji Police force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
Radio New Zealand reports New Zealands Massey University’s – Anna Powles saying, the military stepping up to police duties is not new, but it is a blurring of the distinction between the police and military, which has had a checkered past in Fiji.
Dr Powles told Radio New Zealand it also will not do anything to address the problems in the police force that require the support.
However Police Commissioner – Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho has clarified, the military will only assist the police force in any armed conflicts.
Qiliho has said the Police force is an unarmed institution, and does not have the capabilities to respond in armed conflicts.
