Dan Carter celebrates comeback with quarterfinal clinching win for French club

All Blacks great Dan Carter made a successful return to the rugby field after several months on the sideline to help Racing 92 qualify for the European Champions Cup semifinals.

Carter – who had not played since October after injuries – came off thkole bench for the final 25 minutes of the French club’s 23-20 win over the Leicester Tigers on Sunday (Monday NZ time).

The 35-year-old, who will leave for a two-year deal in Japan in June, took the field in the 54th minute at a snow-covered Welford Road stadium, but Racing didn’t need his goalkicking skills.

Captain Maxime Machenaud had a perfect day with the boot for the Paris club, kicking three penalties and converting two tries, including one of his own.

The 29-year-old French test halfback scored after the ball squirted out of a scrum and referee Nigel Owens confirmed the try after calling for video replays.
