Dhooria crowned Men’s Open Singles Champion

rohan-actionTop Australian Junior team member, Rohan Dhooria participated in the Fiji Table Tennis Open for the first time to take out the Mens Open singles title.

In a pulsating 7 set final , Dhooria seeded No 2 defeated No 1 seed and Pacific No 1, Yoshua Shing 10-12, 11-13, 11-7,11-5, 11-5, 7-11, 12-10 in what was the best ever Mens singles final in Fiji table tennis history that had the Fiji spectators in awe with the high skill level, extreme footwork and mental strength of both players on display.

Both players who have played in major competitions around the world and having trained in some of the world’s best training centres played a grand game with points going neck to neck and the lead changing hands several times .

With Shing winning the first 2 sets on tie breakers, Dhooria fought back to win the next 2 sets to draw level.The turning point was the fifth set which saw Sing take an early leady but only to see Dhooria fight back to take the lead and the match.

If Shing has won the fifth set, he would have had a psychological upper hand putting more pressure on Dhooria to play harder.Instead he changed tactics and played a more controlled fifth game resulting in Shing making mistakes which only takes a miniscule margin of error

The final and seventh set was won or lost by a single missed top spin or flick when the scores were locked at 10 -10.

The appreciative crowd gave a standing ovation to both players who have vowed to return next year. Dhooria also took out the U18 and U21 Mens singles while Shing took out the Mens Doubles and Mixed doubles titles for the second year in a row.
Earlier in the Mens Semi finals Dhooria defeated National team member and deaf player, Philip Wing while Shing accounted for top local veteran player, Zhang Bei Yan.
In the Womens Open Singles, 13 year old Grace Yee defeated elder sister, 14 year old Sally Yee 11-7,11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10 to dominate the female events winning the U15, U18 and Womens Open titles over her elder sister.

Sally defeated Grace Yee to take out the U21 Title. The sisters took out the U15, U18, U21 and Womens Open doubles title.In doing So Grace took out 7 national titles and became the youngest ever Fiji Open champion
