Father found guilty of planting marijuana

Inoke Ratu had pleaded not guilty to the charge and the trial lasted one week.

Suva High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo has overturned the majority opinion of the assessors in the drug trial of Inoke Ratu.

Two of the assessors had found Ratu not guilty of cultivating marijuana in Kadavu while the other assessor found him Guilty.

Police had caught Inoke Ratu in 2014 planting marijuana in his farm.

They uprooted 228 marijuana plants of weighing at 26.4kg from his farm.

During the trial, Inoke Ratu denied planting the marijuana and also told the court that the farm was not his.

He also claimed that he was assaulted by police and forced to sign his caution interview by police.

Ratu told the court that he was so scared of the police beatings that he confessed.

The father of one also claimed that police threatened to kill him if he did not cooperate.

According to police, they did not assault him. The police also told the court that Ratu did not complain to the magistrate about any police misbehavior.

The Prosecution has asked for 13 years imprisonment while the Defence has asked for 11-12 years.
