Screen shot 2016-05-31 at 6.15.43 PMA motion to conduct an independent audit of the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s mills has been defeated in Parliament.

The motion was proposed by Opposition and National Federation Party MP Prem Singh in light of five accidents resulting in three deaths over the last two years in FSC mills.

Singh had moved that an independent audit of the FSC’s mills be made before the start of the 2016 current crushing season, focusing on mill operations and Occupational Health and Safety procedures.

28 MP’s had voted against, 16 voted for while 6 did not vote.

” The FSC has been side stepping the fundamental issue of whether they are properly constituted occupational, health and safety committees at each of the four mills and if so whether the committees are functional, independent or riddled with interference from the management ” said Singh

“The Ministry had collaborated with the FSC through a joint partnership project to design, develop and commission the comprehensive OHS Management system with the primary aim of providing a safe , healthy workplace in all the sugar mills in Fiji ” said Semi Koroilavesau – Minister for Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations
