Man gets life imprisonment sentenced

screen-shot-2016-11-30-at-7-41-23-pmA 29 year old man who was found guilty of attempted rape and murder of a woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The man who claimed he could cure women of certain problems will serve his term before pardon maybe granted.

The incident happened on the 15th of July, 2013 in Malele, Tavua.

29 year old Vinend Kumar claimed he could cure women who had complications by praying over them.

It was heard in court that Kumar had met a 53 year old woman at a prayer meeting where the woman had later asked Kumar to cure a certain personal problem she was facing.

The woman had offered Kumar a gold chain for his assistance when she had gone to his house.

On the 15th of July 2013, the woman had asked Kumar for the chain she had given him to which Kumar responded saying he had sold it.

An argument broke out between the two over the gold chain.

During the argument, Kumar had assaulted the deceased and tried to rape her.

In this process, the 29 year old man had hit the woman with a coffee table and also an iron rod.

This resulted in the death of the woman.

Suva High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo said that in his own opinion, the prosecution witness gave credible evidence.

Justice Temo also said that in Kumar’s caution interview, he admitted he attempted to rape and murder the woman.

The judge said that the accused showed no mercy in what he did.

Vinend Kumar will serve a term of 17 years before a Presidental pardon maybe granted.
